The Pol Wall Light pairs a structured geometric grid with the natural texture of MACA, Avant Mater’s macadamia shell biomaterial. Each year the NSW Northern Rivers region produces around 80% of Australia's macadamia crop, and with it, thousands of tonnes of discarded shell. Agricultural waste streams like this are an increasing focus of materials research, as industries look for value in by-products once deemed useless. Avant Mater mills the shells and sieves them by size, blends them with a bio-based resin into a pourable mixture to be cast into moulds before curing into a dense, stone-like material called MACA. The surface keeps the shell's own texture and tonal variation, a visible record of material origins.
